A Conversation with Bill Gates on Philanthropy

April 6, 2014 | Singapore

Forbes Asia hosted a private dinner for Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft and co-Chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, to meet some 30 members of prominent Asia families and philanthropists from Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Myanmar and Vietnam. Gates engaged in a lively interactive discussion with Asia donors on how best to give strategically, and shared his insights on the most effective approaches to improve global health and development for the world's poorest. The evening underscored how the world's most powerful and generous business leaders can harness the promise of capitalism and philanthropy to make the world a better place.

Prior to the dinner, Forbes Asia's Senior Director of Programming, Cecilia Ma Zecha, conducted a one-on-one interview with Bill Gates. Cecilia asked Gates about Asia's economic rise and its impact on philanthropy, and the potential for strategic philanthropy to grow in the region. Gates also reflected on his own evolution from being the founder of Microsoft to becoming one of the world's most important philanthropists, investing significantly in global health and development for the world's poorest.
